Will Michigan Allow The Death Penalty For Cop Killers? Don’t Bet On It

freedomoutpost.com

The Republican chair of a committee considering whether to allow the death penalty in Michigan says he will not support the measure.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher has more.

A resolution in the state Senate would allow the death penalty for people convicted of murdering police officers in the line of duty.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Rick Jones is a former police officer. He says he’s “firmly against” the death penalty.

“If a mistake is made, we can’t dig somebody up and say we’re sorry,” he says.

The resolution would need two-thirds support from the state House and Senate. It would then need to be approved by Michigan voters.

Jake Neher is a reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He covers the State Legislature and other political events in Lansing.
