Voters in Delhi Township consider police, fire millages

Voters in Delhi Township will decide the fate of millage increase proposals for police and fire protection on Tuesday.

Both proposals would levy one and a half mills for four years. If approved, each would bring in $1.1-million in the first year.

The township has been using reserve funds to balance budgets in recent years, and passage would allow the township to maintain its existing level of service.

Township Manager John Elsinga says if either millage fails, services would be reduced.

"I'll be recommending to the board that we cut our contract, that we reduce our police services, from 18 to 9, if it doesn't pass," Elsinga says. "Likewise, I'll be recommending that our full-time fire-EMS go from 12 firefighter-paramedics down to 6."

Next year, Delhi's debt millage for the township hall will expire, which will ease some of the current budget pressure.
