Vet Comes Home To Lansing, Runs For City Council

Jun 25, 2017

Army veteran Thomas J. Harris Junior is running for one of two at-large seats up for grabs in Lansing this year. He’s a Sexton High School graduate who moved back to Lansing late last year after serving his country around the world.

Harris says he thinks his diverse relationships with people from all over the world has prepared him for city council service. "Our city is a big melting pot," he explains, "and I can bring that experience to the city and help broaden our horizons."

Harris's military service has included stints in South Korea, Germany, Iraq and at bases around the U.S.

Education is the first issue he would like to work on if elected, along with attracting small businesses to Lansing.

Only one at-large council member, Kathie Dunbar, is running for re-election this year. The other, Judi Brown Clarke, is running for mayor. Harris says he has nothing personal against Dunbar, but he's hoping that new faces will be on the council after the November election.
