Verlander's 11 Ks help Tigers beat Nationals 8-3

DETROIT – Justin Verlander's season-high 11 strikeouts and Brennan Boesch's three-run homer lifted the Detroit Tigers to an 8-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.

Detroit has won five straight, matching a season high. Washington has lost four of five.

Verlander (8-4) gave up three runs - two on solo homers - seven hits and no walks over eight innings.

Livan Hernandez (5-4) allowed eight runs, doubling his season high, and seven hits and a season-high six walks over 6 2-3 innings.

Adam Dunn and Roger Bernadina hit solo shots in the first two innings to put Washington ahead 2-0.

Detroit scored its first run in the second on a bases-loaded walk. Gerald Laird's two-run single and Don Kelly's sacrifice fly made it 4-2.
