Turtles rescued from Mich. oil spill get new home

By AP

MARSHALL, MI –

The reptiles, mammals and birds rescued from an oil spill in a southern Michigan river are starting to find new homes.

Two rehabilitated soft-shell turtles are scheduled Monday to go to their new home at Binder Park Zoo in Calhoun County. The turtles were recovered by crews working to clean up last week's oil spill on the Kalamazoo River.

More than 90 oil-covered turtles, birds and animals such as muskrats have been brought to the official wildlife animal rehabilitation center. Several more have been taken to other wildlife refuges in the area.

The EPA estimates the spill at more than 1 million gallons. Enbridge Inc., which owns the pipeline, estimates the total at 820,000 gallons.

The leak has been contained but cleanup could take months.
