Tiny Detroit park home to state's original capitol

A new book by Jack Dempsey tells the story of Detroit’s historic Capitol Park. It’s the site of Michigan’s first capitol building, and the state’s first governor is buried there. The triangular park is surrounded by old buildings that are being refurbished near the Westin Book Cadillac hotel.

Current State’s Scott Pohl paid a visit to the park to talk with Dempsey, president of the Michigan Historical Commission. He had never paid much attention to the area until he joined the Commission, but has been captivated by the story since 2007.

Scott Pohl is a general assignment news reporter and produces news features and interviews. He is also an alternate local host on NPR's "Morning Edition."
