Tigers' Verlander shuts down Royals in 13-1 win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Justin Verlander held slumping Kansas City to five hits through seven scoreless innings and Miguel Cabrera had three RBIs and four of Detroit's season-high 19 hits as the Tigers routed the Royals 13-1.

Gerald Laird, Brandon Inge and Clete Thomas had two RBIs each for the Tigers, who won for the 23rd time in their last 31 outings at Kauffman Stadium and increased their lead over Kansas City to four games in the AL Central.

Detroit's 19 hits and 13 runs were both season-highs allowed by the Royals.

Verlander gave up five singles and allowed just one runner to reach second base during his seven sparkling innings.

He did not issue a walk and had eight strikeouts, taking over the major league lead with 85.
