A new study by the Anderson Economic Group in East Lansing says almost two-thirds of Michigan's manufacturing workforce is now involved in advanced, high-tech manufacturing. The presidents of the three schools that make up the University Research Corridor---Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University---say the numbers show that investment in university research is helping Michigan transform its economy.
"There's really hope, I think, for us to work together, around this very--in some ways--esoteric science, and using natural science, engineering, biology to apply it in ways that can really grow jobs in Michigan," said MSU president Lou Anna Simon.
The report claims more than half of the state's advanced manufacturers are seeing productivity gains exceeding the national average. The consortium says it invested more than $100 million in advanced manufacturing R&D in 2009.
