Students assist Haiti relief effort

East Lansing, MI – Students at Michigan State University are working with the American Red Cross to provide relief for victims of the earthquake in Haiti, and to give emotional support to their relatives here.

The Michigan State University Caribbean Student Association has begun a project it calls Help Haiti Heal. Members have been collecting donations this week on behalf of the American Red Cross. The group continues that work tomorrow at MSU's annual Martin Luther King Day observance at the student union.

Haiti is widely viewed as the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and association vice-president Princess Souvenir says victims are struggling to fill basic needs.

"So, they sustain off of food that they would typically give to the animals because that's all they have," Souvenir says. "So, any funds that we can help deliver to the Red Cross would be wonderful so that they can help them more directly down there."

Souvenir says the association will send volunteers door to door throughout Lansing and East Lansing on Monday in continuation of its fundraising efforts.
