The State Board of Education could join the effort to pass a May ballot proposal to boost road funding.
The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports.
State lawmakers are asking voters to approve raising the sales tax from 6% to 7%. If approved, it’s expected to increase road funding by more than a $1 billion a year. It would also boost funding for schools by about $300 million a year.
John Austin is the President of the State Board of Education.
“I think people want to fix the roads, they want to support their schools, and I think they’re willing to pay more, in fact, to do that – if they’re satisfied that that’s what’s going to happen,” he says.
Opponents of the proposal say it would hurt consumers and businesses.
