Schuette charges former fire chief with racketeering

By Laura Weber, Michigan Public Radio Network

LANSING, MI –

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has filed racketeering and bribery charges against a former fire chief in Pontiac. As Michigan Public Radio's Laura Weber reports, Schuette has filed many corruption charges against public officials since he took office in January.

John Sellek with the attorney general's office says Schuette wants to make good on a campaign promise to weed out corruption among public and state officials. Sellek says Schuette created a public corruption unit when he took office at the beginning of the year.

"And since that's been in place since January of this year we've now filed over 100 charges because of these special efforts."

Adding to that list of charges are those against the former fire chief in Pontiac who allegedly solicited and accepted bribes from a bar owner to ignore fire code violations. The charges are a result of an FBI investigation.
