Schauer says trade deficit hurting Michigan manufacturing

Michigan Congressman Mark Schauer says increasing trade gaps between the U-S and countries like China and South Korea are partly to blame for the recent slowdown in the U-S economy.

Schauer held a town-hall meeting in Delta Township Friday to talk about his trade policies. He says a free trade agreement the South Korean government is promoting would make the situation worse, especially for the auto industry.

"That would be disastrous for jobs here in mid Michigan" He says. "For every hundred cars that South Korea exports to the U-S we can send one car there."

Schauer is seeking a 2nd term representing Michigan's 7th congressional district. His opponent, republican Tim Walberg says reduced government spending and lower taxes would encourage economic growth and job creation.
