Roads, Pot, Civil Rights On Agenda As State Lawmakers Return From Summer Break

The state Legislature’s two-month summer break ends Tuesday.

As The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports, lawmakers are not expected to pass many bills between now and the November election.

Republican legislative leaders still have some big priorities to accomplish before the end of the year. None are bigger than finding a way to fix Michigan’s crumbling roads. But it looks like most of those things will have to wait until the Legislature’s “lame duck” session in December.

Ari Adler is a spokesperson for state House Speaker Jase Bolger.

“We’re going to have a lot of action happening,” he says.  “I think it’ll be more at the committee level over the next few weeks. But that is very important so when we get back again we can continue to push forward.”

Lawmakers are expected to introduce a bill to add sexual orientation to the list of things protected under Michigan’s civil rights law. Speaker Bolger says he’s not willing to commit to a vote until he can see the actual legislation.

Jake Neher is a reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He covers the State Legislature and other political events in Lansing.
