Red Wings sign Hobey Baker finalist Brendan Smith

By AP

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says the team has signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a three-year entry level contract.

Other details weren't released Thursday.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound 21-year-old was Detroit's first round draft pick and 27th overall in the 2007 draft. He's from Mimico, Ontario, and spent the past three seasons playing for Wisconsin.

In the 2009-10 season, he led the nation in defense scoring with 15 goals and 52 points. He was one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate hockey player.
