Youth from mid-Michigan continue their quest for tuition scholarships to Michigan State University in the second week of the QuizBusters semi-finals on Saturday, May 18, at 6 and 6:30 p.m.
Hosted by Matt Ottinger, these games determine who will compete in the Division Championship and Grand Championship matches, airing in Wednesday, May 22, at 8 p.m. as the QuizBusters Championship Series.
On Saturday, May 18 at 6 p.m., the Green Division will feature the Okemos Chieftains versus the Haslett Vikings. Playing on the team for the Okemos Chieftains are Emily Brereton, Abhijit Das, Kevin Hutsell and team captain Mayank Patke. Andy Floyd is the team advisor. The Chiefs were Grand Champions in 2010-11.
Playing on the team for the Haslett Vikings are Matt Heard, Katie Panter, Tessa Clarizio and team captain Thomas Grubb. Alison Dykman is the team advisor.
In a QuizBusters White Division semi-final game, airing Saturday at 6:30 p.m., the Jackson Christian Royals take on the Lansing Catholic Cougars.
Playing for the Jackson Christian Royals are Andrew Fretwell, Chris Olmos, Kennedy Wilson and team captain Zack Schneider. Joanne Knowlton is the team advisor. The Royals won the Grand Championship in 2011-2012.
Playing for the Lansing Catholic Cougars are Stephanie Brown, Joseph Crowley, Rob Maurie and team captain Joe Strasz. Kathy Ryan is the team advisor.
In the first two semi-final matches, now available for online viewing at WKAR.org, the Lansing Eastern Quakers won the Green Division and Hillsdale Academy Colts won the White Division. They will compete with the winning teams in these games, with the prize being up to eight $5,000 Champion tuition scholarships to Michigan State University. Grand champions will receive five one-year textbook scholarships provided by the Student Book Store.
QuizBusters is wrapping up its 24th season. Host Matt Ottinger has been throwing out challenging questions for the contestants since the show began. The program is underwritten in part by Consumers Energy and the Michigan Education Association.
