Okemos Schools anticipating more cuts

By Gretchen Millich, WKAR News

Okemos, MI –
The Okemos School Board meets Monday to pass a mid-year budget, but the board is not expected to address cuts in state funding.

Superintendent Cheryl Kreger says the district is already dealing with a drop in funding due to a loss of about 90 students this year. She says administrators will tackle cuts in state funding next year, "Because we don't know enough to make corrections right now. We may get hit again. The hit may lessen. But for all practical purposes, it looks like we will be dealt another unfortunate blow."

Earlier this year, the Okemos board agreed to save money by closing two elementary schools. Kreger says they'll dip into their reserve fund to cover this latest shortfall.
