It’s Wednesday and time for our Neighbors in Action segment, where we feature people and organizations working to make our community a better place. Today we feature the local effort to raise funds for the funeral and family of Michael Addo, the pharmacist who was shot to death at the Rite Aid in Frandor last Monday.

A spokesperson for Rite Aid Pharmacy confirmed to Current State yesterday that it has agreed to donate $10,000 to Michael’s family and said the company will pay for expenses related to the burial, including transportation back to his home country of Ghana.

However, there are grassroots efforts in the Lansing community to raise funds for Mr. Addo’s family as well. The effort is being led by the Lansing Regional Sister Cities Commission, which has an official relationship with the city of Akuapim in Ghana. Joining Current State today are Barbara Mason, the commission’s president, along with two of Michael’s friends, Dr. Nana Achampong and Kingsley Aboagye. Achampong was Michael’s neighbor and Aboagye was Michael’s classmate in pharmacy school. They reflect on the impact the loss of Michael has had on their lives here in Lansing and discuss plans to provide aid for his family.

EVENT: Memorial service for Michael Addo
WHEN: Saturday, May 24, at 7pm
WHERE: Union Missionary Baptist Church
500 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd
The event is open to the public.

We could always use more nominations and we know there are people and organizations out there that are doing excellent work, but we just don’t know about them. Please help us out and tweet us suggestions at  @KARCurrentState or send us an email to Currentstate@wkar.org. Put “Neighbors in Action” in the subject line and tell us why you think they should be featured for the great work they do.
