MSU Study: No easy way to identify mass shooters

By Rob South, WKAR

EAST LANSING, MI –
A study from Michigan State University finds that there is no clear way to best identify risk factors of mass shooters.

A rampage in Tucson, Arizona earlier this month left six people dead and 13 wounded, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. A 22-year-old college dropout has been charged with first-degree murder for the shootings.

MSU's Hyunkag Cho says it's unclear what roll mental illness, access to guns and media exposure to gun violence play in mass shootings. Cho says that makes it nearly impossible to create legislation that would prevent the crime.

"So every person has some degree of responsibility to do something in their position, in their status to reduce this problem," he says. "So, one-fits-all policy is not possible to do."

Cho says more education for parents and teachers about mental health issues and better access to mental healthcare would help identify people who might be predisposition to violence.
