Michigan's Graduation Rate Dips Slightly for 2011
Tougher graduation requirements for Michigan's high school class of 2011 did not result in a sharp rise in the number of dropouts.
The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/HyyAan ) reports Tuesday that state statistics show a slight decline in graduation rates but not the surge in dropouts that some had predicted after the state toughened requirements.
The Class of 2011 was the first in Michigan to need more math, science and other classes to get a degree.
The state's Center for Educational Performance and Information says the Class of 2011's dropout rate was 11.13 percent, up from 11.07 percent for the Class of 2010.
The graduation rate was 74.33% for the Class of 2011, compared to 75.95% in 2010.
