Michigan secretary of state candidates Ruth Johnson and Jocelyn Benson are expected to meet for a debate next month.

The campaigns confirmed Tuesday that Johnson, the Republican Oakland County clerk, would debate Benson, a Democratic Wayne State University law professor.

The two will meet Oct. 8 at the WKAR television studios in East Lansing.

Johnson's campaign says it's the only debate in the race that's currently scheduled. Benson's campaign wants three debates.

Tim Skubick, host of public television's "Off the Record" program, will be the moderator.

Republican Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is unable to run again after serving eight years because of term limits.

Three third-party candidates also are running.
