Michigan Public Radio Network – The Michigan Legislature is taking another break after returning this week from a two week summer recess. The state House held a procedural roll call Thursday, but regular session was canceled for both the House and the Senate.

AUDIO: In the empty House chamber there was just one name flagged "present" on the attendance board of more than a hundred state representatives.

State House Speaker Pro Tem Pam Byrnes was there to formally open the session, despite the empty chamber.

State lawmakers met once this week, with Lansing buzzing over how to deal with a nearly $2 billion budget deficit. And then they left.

The Legislature is expected to reconvene at the end of July, but will meet only briefly before it takes another break in August.
