A group of activists says 2016 is the year to legalize marijuana in Michigan.
The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher reports.
The group says it will launch a petition drive this year. It’s still finalizing the proposal’s language – but activists say it will allow people to grow up to 12 marijuana plants each.
Matthew Abel directs the pro-marijuana group Michigan NORML – and is one of the campaign’s organizers. He’s confident they’ll have the support to pass the measure.
“It’s no longer a question of ‘if,’ it’s more a question of ‘when and how,’” he says.
But other marijuana activists in Michigan question whether there will be enough financial support to collect signatures. A group led by Republican operatives is also considering a separate legalization initiative in 2016.
