LANSING, MI –
Michigan transportation officials are preparing to delay more than 200 road and bridge projects previously planned for the next five years because the state is
running low on money.
A state transportation committee is expected to approve its newest project plan Thursday.
Michigan could go from spending roughly $1.4 billion on roads this year with the help of federal stimulus money to less than $600 million three out of the next four years. The state is in danger of losing federal matching funds for roads because it doesn't spend enough of its own money on projects.
Bills that would raise more money for road construction through higher fuel taxes are pending in the state Legislature. But it will be difficult for supporters to overcome opposition to tax increases.
