Mich. governor asks for Monroe County storm aid

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has declared a state of emergency in storm-damaged Monroe County.

Hundreds of homes and business in and near Dundee were damaged or destroyed by the twister that touched down Sunday. It was one of eight tornadoes that hit southern Michigan over the weekend, including another in Monroe County that forced a shutdown at the Fermi 2 nuclear plant.

Dozens of state troopers and officers from across the state have been in the area to help with security, while other agencies have aided the cleanup.

State police are working with local officials to gather damage information to decide if more state help is needed and if the area may be eligible for federal funds.

Granholm issued the declaration Wednesday.
