Mich. art competition down to 10 finalists

By AP

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – It's the midway point of a big, new art competition in Grand Rapids and organizers have narrowed down the 10 finalists for the $250,000 top prize.

ArtPrize officials are to announce the finalists Thursday evening.

About 1,260 artists are displaying their works at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the city's downtown. The 18-day event opened Sept. 23 and runs through Oct. 10.

The public chose the top 10 artists by voting for their favorite entries. Each finalist is guaranteed a share of the $449,000 in total prize money.

The first round of voting ended yesterday with 320,399 votes cast.

The finalists are starting the second round with zero votes. The one with the most votes from the public by Oct. 7 will be announced as the winner a day later.
