MI Voice: Chicana Describes Being Caught In The Middle

Aug 24, 2017

This week on All Things Considered, we are hearing from five of your Michigan neighbors of diverse backgrounds their perspective on race and culture. Clara Martinez, an Americore Vista and local dance teacher talked about being both Chicana and white and sometimes being caught in the middle of those two worlds.

WKAR Digital News Director Reginald Hardwick asked all of our panel their backgrounds and where they grew up.. And then they answered three questions:

-What is their first memory of learning they were different?

-What is misunderstood about their race or ethnicity?

-What makes them proud of their race or ethnicity?

As you listen to them, understand that you hearing their perspectives. They are NOT speaking for everyone who shares their race or ethnicity, ONLY sharing their perspectives.
