LANSING, MI –
A state House panel has begun discussions of a proposal to extend term limits of state politicians.
AUDIO:
Democratic state Representative Mark Meadows says most lawmakers in the House get a handle on being an elected official by their third term.
"By the time anybody has learned the system and can really effectively move legislation here, they're ready to go out the door."
Meadows sponsored the measure that would extend term years in both the House and Senate. He thinks most people want some sort of term limits in place, but that term limits that are too onerous stymie the legislative process. The measure would require a two thirds majority from the Legislature to get the question of extending term limits to voters.
