LANSING, MI – A group studying ways to improve transportation from downtown Lansing to the Meridian Mall in Okemos is now focusing on three options.

Audio:

The regional steering committee looked at many options, and chose three: bus rapid transit, modern streetcar, and light rail transit. Those alternatives will be weighed against the potential of conventional bus service. Debbie Alexander of the Capital Area Transportation Authority says cost and space limitations forced the committee to eliminate some options. She doesn't see any of the remaining possibilities moving ahead of the others at this point.

"There's nothing that the consultants have told us, or that that preliminary analysis showed, that would indicate to us that any one of the three of these would have less of an option."

The committee rejected commuter and heavy rail, magnetic levitation, electric trolley and a Detroit People Mover-like automatic guide-way transit system. A decision on leaving the corridor as it is, or proceeding in some other fashion, is expected by the end of the year.
