Lansing schools hopeful of 'Promise Zone' status

By Mark Bashore, WKAR Radio News

East Lansing, MI – East Lansing, MI (WKAR Radio)

Lansing public school officials could get some good news over the weekend.

The state is expected to announce whether Lansing is among the districts approved as 'Promise Zones.'

The designation would allow Lansing to pursue state revenue earmarked for college tuition.

Superintendant T.C. Wallace says a "Lansing Promise Council" would be charged with raising critical funds.

The legislation requires districts to show they can fund the initiative for two years before state money becomes available.

Wallace cautions it could take up to five years for the initiative to be financially viable.
