Lansing awards "sense of place" arts grants

By Kevin Lavery, WKAR

LANSING, MI –

The city of Lansing is awarding $125,000 in grants to eight local arts institutions. The funding is to help the groups build a "sense of place" that will make Lansing a destination for arts and culture.

Leslie Donaldson is the executive director of the Greater Lansing Arts Council. She says Lansing's sense of place can be defined in different ways.

"Making sure that there are educational opportunities to entice and keep and retain youth and refugees in our community and allow them to feel welcome," she says. "It can be having our region look very positively as we support creative jobs...all different sorts of things in that."

Recipients include, among others, the Lansing Art Galley, the MSU Community Music School and the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council.
