Inspectors in Michigan find destructive beetle

By AP

DETROIT – U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists in Detroit turned up a small yet destructive beetle in a sea container from Jordan.

The agency says the khapra beetle was found March 12 in a shipment of melon seeds. The khapra beetle damages grain and cereal products, seeds, cottonseed meal, nut meats, dried fruits and other products.

The shipment was quarantined. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will oversee any treatment options on the shipment.
