LANSING, MI –
A top Ingham county education official says area teachers will be better equipped to help students struggling with behavioral and psychological challenges in the coming school year.

The county's 12 public school districts are about to begin the second phase of an initiative aimed at earlier student interventions. Stan Kogut is the Superintendent of the Ingham Intermediate School District. He says the program was launched last year, but was limited to students facing reading difficulties.

"Now we're going to be focusing more on behavior," Kogut says. "They have to be able to pay attention, but then, what kind of interventions do you need? Some kids are oral listeners, some do better by reading to them. You meet the kids where their needs are."

Kogut says the initiative could be saving school districts a total of several million dollars a year by preventing students from transferring to more expensive special education classrooms. The program was funded with 11-million dollars in federal economic stimulus money.
