Hundreds have to wait until next week to get cars

By AP

IONIA, MI – Hundreds of people whose cars were stranded at the Ionia County fairgrounds after last weekend's storms caused flooding will have to wait until at least Monday to get back their vehicles.

Dozens of angry motorists showed up at the Ionia City Council chambers Wednesday to hear City Manager Jason Eppler explain next week's retrieval plan.

The recovery operation is expected to take about five days. Appointments will be made with owners to pick up their vehicles, and a towing company will move them to a staging area so owners can claim them without having to enter the flooded area.

Flood waters overran the riverbanks Saturday while tens of thousands were attending a country music concert. The sudden rise trapped cars in the lot, and some people had to be evacuated by boat.
