Hamilton's America - An Evening with WKAR

Mid-Michigan gets a first look at the pop culture Broadway phenomenon Hamilton as WKAR presents a special preview of Great Performances: Hamilton’s America. Directed by Alex Horwitz, the new documentary explores America’s founding while following Lin-Manuel Miranda through the creation of his Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning megahit.

The Evening at WKAR includes screening of an extended excerpt (30-40 minutes) from the film, plus introductory comments from Jeff Wray, filmmaker and associate professor in the department of English at Michigan State University. Guests will also be treated to highlights from the PBS Arts Fall Festival.

Offered first to WKAR donors and supporters, the premiere presentation taking place 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 was fully reserved within 18 hours of becoming available.

A second showing offered to the general public (future WKAR supporters!) has been added on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. (NOTE: Reservations filled as of 6:15pm 10/4)

Evening with WKAR featuring “Hamilton’s America” takes place at WKAR Studio A, 404 Wilson Road on the campus of Michigan State University. Parking is free (after 6 p.m.) in the Trowbridge Road parking ramp, near the South, Main Lobby.

Hamilton’s America is a feature documentary that explores America’s founding while following Lin-Manuel Miranda through the creation of his pop culture sensation, Hamilton. The film delves even deeper into the creation of the show, revealing Miranda’s process of absorbing and then adapting Hamilton’s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Further fleshing out the story is newly shot footage of the New York production with its original cast, trips to historic locations, such as Mt. Vernon and Valley Forge with Miranda and other cast members, and a surprising range of interviews with prominent personalities, experts, politicians, and musicians   including President Barack Obama, President George W. Bush. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Secretary Hank Paulson, Secretary Timothy Geithner, Questlove, Black Thought, Jimmy Fallon, John Weidman, Nas and Stephen Sondheim.

The full 90-minute documentary, Great Performances: Hamilton’s America, airs on Friday, Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. on WKAR and PBS.
