Granholm: Wagoner a "sacrificial lamb"

By Rick Pluta, Michigan Public Radio Network

Lansing, MI – Lansing, MI (MPRN) - Governor Granholm says General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner's resignation was necessary to win political support for the domestic automotive industry.

She appeared this morning on N-B-C's "Today" show to talk about the resignation. And she addressed the Obama administration's insistence that the Detroit carmakers need to do more restructuring.

Granholm said the federal government needs to recognize the importance of the American automobile industry to the nation, to jobs, to the manufacturing sector, and to national security. She called Rick Wagoner "a sacrificial lamb."

The governor says the auto industry is already working hard on restructuring. She says the car companies have cut more than 600 thousand jobs, and more layoffs are on the way.
