LANSING, MI – Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she has reservations about an overhaul of public employee health benefits proposed by the top Democrat in the Michigan Legislature.
Granholm told reporters Monday it would be tough to address the proposal as part of budget negotiations that must be wrapped up in 2 1/2 months.
She questions the timing and whether House Speaker Andy Dillon's plan would save as much money as he says.
The Democratic governor says state employees don't get "gold-plated" health benefits and pay a similar amount for their insurance as private-sector employees.
Granholm says school districts and local governments are negotiating concessions, too. She didn't indicate if she thought benefits for teachers or local public workers are too expensive.
