SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Some government researchers say the Environmental Protection Agency should take a closer look at sports fields and playgrounds made from ground-up tires.
The EPA for years has endorsed recycled-rubber surfaces as a means of decreasing playground injuries. But documents show its own scientists have pointed to research suggesting potential hazards from repeated exposure to bits of shredded tire that can contain carcinogens and other chemicals. Other reviews show little or no health concern.
Last week, New York state officials said they found no significant health or environmental concerns.
Recycled tires are used under the Obama family's new play set at the White House.
The documents were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by the advocacy group, Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility.
