Democrats and Republicans will hold their state party conventions this weekend.
They’ll nominate candidates for attorney general, secretary of state, the Michigan Supreme Court, and education boards.

At the Republican convention in Novi, party unity will be tested by a fight over who will be Governor Rick Snyder’s running mate. He wants the convention to re-nominate Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley. But there is a Tea Party challenger – activist Wes Nakagiri.
Bobby Schostak is the state GOP chairman. He says it could turn into a donnybrook.
“I suspect Brian will prevail, but conventions can have interesting moments, and we’ll see how it goes,” he says.
GOP conventions in recent years have been marked by impassioned battles between the Tea Party and establishment Republicans.
Democrats will also hold a nominating convention this weekend in Lansing. Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown appears unopposed to be Democratic nominee Mark Schauer’s running mate.
