General Motors has announced that it will invest more than a quarter of a billion dollars into plants in Michigan and Kansas.

AUDIO:
GM says it will spend $136 million at its Fairfax, Kansas plant to produce the next generation of the Chevy Malibu sedan.

The automaker is putting another $121 million into the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to build the Malibu during times of peak demand.

Here's CEO Ed Whitacre at the Kansas plant, saying the decision is another import step in turning GM around.

"We are confident that are decision to build the new Malibu here in Fairfax and in Detroit-Hamtramck will bring huge dividends for our company and for our customers. It will support Kansas and Michigan and it will benefit the taxpayer who made this investment possible."

Whitacre also announced that General Motors has finished repaying more than $8 dollars in loans made by the U.S. and Canadian governments nearly five years ahead of schedule.

GM still owes taxpayers more than $40 billion.
