Fans fondly remember Detroit broadcaster Harwell

By AP

DETROIT – Fans have been invited to Comerica Park to pay their final respects to cherished broadcaster Ernie Harwell, whose love of the game enriched the Detroit Tigers' successes and soothed the pain of losing.

The stadium opened at 7 a.m. Thursday to allow fans to view the body of Harwell, who died Tuesday of cancer at age 92. The Tigers said the viewing would continue until the last fan had said goodbye.

Some fans didn't wait, leaving flowers Wednesday in front of the concrete Tiger statue outside the stadium's main gate. Nearby on the main concourse is a life-sized statue of Harwell, microphone in hand, with the inscription, "The Tigers's broadcasting legend and masterful storyteller for 42 seasons."

Family members will hold a private funeral service.
