Lansing, MI – Michigan's unpopular Driver Responsibility Fee could soon be repealed. The annual fee is assessed to people with seven or more points on their licenses. Lawmakers who helped craft the fee several years ago now agree it ended up being a bad idea.

Democratic state Representative Bettie Scott is part of a group of Detroit lawmakers that pushed to repeal the Driver Responsibility Fee.

Scott says, "It has created fees and fines that are excessive and have forced many to drive illegally so that they can provide for their families. Today we have the opportunity to correct this injustice for the Michigan citizens."

Legislation approved by the House Wednesday would eliminate most of the fees by 2012. The fees would be left in place for drunk drivers and other serious driving offenses.
