HAMTRAMCK, MI –
A woman has received the keys to a new home in a small Detroit-area city as Hamtramck works to solve a discrimination case that began in the 1960s.
A judge found Hamtramck had violated the civil rights of blacks by destroying housing in the name of urban renewal. In 1980, the city agreed that 200 units of family housing would be developed to make up for what happened.
It's 2010 - and Hamtramck still hasn't met that goal. But officials are confident the finish line is near. Ironically, the city is very diverse with immigrants from the Middle East and Bangladesh.
Sallie Sanders was a teenager in the '60s when her family was forced to leave their rental home. The 60-year-old received the keys to a subsidized home Monday during a ceremony tied to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
