Dems air statewide attack ad against Justice Young

The Michigan Democratic Party is running its first statewide TV ad against Republican Supreme Court Justice Robert Young Jr., linking him to the oil spill last summer in the Kalamazoo River.

The ad unveiled Wednesday says Michigan citizens won't be able to hold Enbridge Inc. accountable because of a 2007 court decision supported by Young.

The court's then-conservative majority restricted environmental lawsuits by people unless they were directly affected by damage. The case involved a bottled-water operation.

Enbridge already is under orders by state and federal regulators to clean up the oil spill in the Kalamazoo River. The company is buying houses from people affected by the broken pipeline.

Young campaign spokesman Tom Shields says Democrats are ignoring the truth.
