Charges coming following Detroit schools audits

By AP

DETROIT – Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb plans to announce criminal charges following a number of fraud investigations into the district.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy is to join Bobb for Wednesday's announcement that follows ongoing audits and probes into waste and theft throughout the schools.

Audits released last week revealed the district has been paying $2.1 million per year in health coverage for ineligible dependents, unused cell phones and 11 motorcycles.

The district is facing a projected $259 million deficit.

At least five former employees - including two principals - were charged earlier this summer after investigations into theft and abuses of students.

Bobb was appointed by Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
