Big Ten athletic officials have announced the University of Maryland will be joining the conference in 2014.
The affiliation is expected to address financial distress in school’s athletic department.
MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis responded to the move.
"The University of Maryland gives us a very strong hold, especially for the long term on the east coast of the United States in a market that’s important to every school in the Big Ten conference,” he said.
There’s speculation that Rutgers University will follow Maryland into the Big Ten, as early as Tuesday.
