The two candidates for governor appeared at the same event Thursday - an early childhood education rally in East Lansing. Both candidates spoke to the crowd about the importance of early childhood education in Michigan. But as Michigan Public Radio's Laura Weber reports, the focus was much different when the candidates left the stage.

AUDIO:
Now that Republican candidate Rick Snyder has unveiled his pick for lieutenant governor, the spotlight is on Democratic candidate Virg Bernero and his choice for LG. Bernero does not deny it has been difficult to find the right candidate for the job. But he says he's optimistic.

"I feel very good about where we're headed," he says. "Look, it's a tough job. This is the public arena, it's asking a lot of somebody and I'm grateful to still have some very good choice."

Bernero is expected to unveil his running mate in the next day or two. And he didn't have much to say about Snyder's pick of state Representative Brian Calley. Both Bernero and Snyder are expected to appear with their respective running mates this weekend at the Democratic and Republican Party onventions.
