Democratic candidate for governor Virg Bernero says he cannot promise that state payments to local government services would not be reduced if he is elected. He says those services, such as police and fire, are a top priority. But he also says it's important to make sure the services are running efficiently.
"Just as we have an obligation to deliver as much bang for the buck at the local level, we'll continue to try to apply technology wherever we can and be as efficient as we can be, as how we organize ourselves," he says. "But we will be standing up for revenue sharing. I can't say no cuts, but what I can say is public safety will be a top priority."
Bernero was endorsed Monday by the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union. His opponent, Republican candidate Rick Snyder has also said he cannot make promises about funding cuts before he takes office.
