Bernero asks campaign treasurer to step down

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has asked a local rental property owner, who owes more than $90,000 in back taxes, to step down as treasurer of his gubernatorial campaign committee.

Democrat Bernero says he asked Charles L. Moore to resign Wednesday until his tax issues are resolved. Bernero says he doesn't want Moore to get "caught up in a media sideshow" that would take attention away from his campaign's message of "putting people back to work."

A Lansing State Journal review of public documents showed Moore owes back taxes on 22 rental properties.

Moore tells the newspaper that the depressed local economy has left him unable to borrow money to pay off the taxes or sell the properties quickly. He declined further comment.
