The Democratic and Republican candidates for state attorney general accused each other of being soft on crime in their only scheduled debate. The debate will air this weekend on public television stations.

AUDIO:
Much of the debate sounded like this:

(cacophony of two men arguing )

The candidates are Republican Bill Schuette, a former congressman, state senator, and appeals court judge, and Democrat David Leyton, the Genesee County prosecutor.
Leyton says Schuette's record as a judge shows he's soft on crime.

"You have stood with murderers, rapists, and other criminals against law enforcement and against those who would stand up for victims," he says.

Schuette, who has been endorsed by police organizations, called Leyton a shoddy prosecutor.

"And if you can't the job done at home, you can't be promoted to be the chief law enforcement officer of Michigan," he said.

Both campaigns brought families of murder victims to the debate. Other traditional responsibilities of the office, such as consumer and environmental protection, went unmentioned.
