AP source: GM studying more temporary shutdowns

By AP

Detroit, MI – Detroit (AP) - A person briefed on General Motors Corp.'s production plans says the automaker is considering temporarily closing more factories this summer to keep inventory levels down as it tries to emerge from bankruptcy protection.

The person says decisions are still being made on which plants would see additional down time in the third quarter. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are not final.

GM normally releases third-quarter production estimates with its May sales statistics, but the figures were absent from data released Tuesday.

In April, GM announced it would shut down 13 assembly plants for up to 11 weeks this summer to control inventory.
